I’m sorry if this is necro and what not. Just started reading :s But if Mr Toad and The Bear along with Laurence is part of their own continuity then it confuses me that The Bear was part of the main comic when Flore got attacked after the chess game. Rant. Really nice comic tho! :)
The talking frog is the best one in the cast. He owns when everyone else just rents. How do we know this isn’t his comic and everything else isn’t just a failed spin-off?
Not really. It is just that “Laurent” translates into English as “Lawrence” and is less commonly spelt “Laurence”. I think that the English name you are really after is either “Laura” or “Lauren”…
Growing up, we had this poor kid from a French part of the world named “Michel”. Sadly he forgot to make his name SOUND like the English name “Michael”, and as the class had a couple of girls named “Michelle” you can see how this poor kid got mocked for a while for having a girl’s name…
I wouldn’t want to change me name for anything else even if it was more familiar to an english audience, though. Michel as a name is super manly for me, not my fault if you English Types decided only to import the female form in your language. ;)
I was not after an english name with Laurence, though. She was always known as Laurence. As a french name it’s very gender-neutral. :)
Laurent is her dad’s name. Well, Flore’s dad, if Flore and Laurence ARE actually related.
Yeah, hate to say it, but I’d hitherto regarded that name as unquestionably masculine too…
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised though.
French men always seem to have the most feminine-sounding names… at least to me. It is just odd to see it going the other way around. The French language itself just sounds very flowery and effeminate to me. For it to have masculine-sounding names at all is surprising, let alone for them to be worn by females…
I’d have figured it was just one of those things where girls can have male names if they want to… (or if their parents decided to give them such).
… To be fair, Welsh is a bit flowery too. Nowhere near as much as French, but moreso than English.
But I also read a comics which has a girl named George and another with a girl named John. So I’m quite alright with girls having names that sound masculine to me.
And now I’ve even learned something about French names.
If you have to ask “whether” someone “is a boy or girl” … you probably shouldn’t in this day and age.
There is a significant probability that the target of such a question would start ranting about the gender-binary and everything would swiftly go Tumblr-style.
(The site is in only in French right now but an English version will come soon. You can still order the English version of the books there. Be sure to specify.)

Fourth wall, frog >_<
He’s a Toad.
Touche
Hehe I love this page :D
I take it that the Laurence strips will remain separate from the rest of cast?
They’re filler strips, I guess, but they do serve their purpose. But yeah, she’s in her separate time and continuity… although… http://frivolesque.com/archives/comic/clementine

Nah. Feel free to comment everything freely here. :)
And yes… it’s weird, I know. Let’s jsut say Flore and Laurence share a connnection. :)

You might have something there.
Are we Dadaists?
I’m doing high art here.
Nice!
Sooo… Is Laurence a girl or a boy? Whichever, s/he dresses nicely.
What makes you think Laurence could be a boy?
I’m curious. :)
Nothing beyond the fact that here in Amurrica, Laurence is always a male name. It has nothing to do with liking sexually ambiguous characters.
Ah, right!
I guess Laurence has a pretty strange name for english speakers.
But I guess, it’s part of the character’s appeal.

This is the first time I notice her name :P

I hired a bear-driven gondola once. He didn’t even know his way around Venice. Total waste of my hundred bucks.
$200 if he wore pants.
Might have been worth it.
I kinda thought that this world was in Flore’s imagination, and that the girl was her inner projection.
Apparently, she’s a whole new character. Hm.
I wouldn’t say she’s new since she’s been around since the beginning.
I hold nothing but love and appreciation for this talking frog.
