French please!
I guess some of my international readership might not have realized yet that I’m a French Canadian from Quebec, which means my first language is french. And as a french speaking guy, I’ve always wanted to have a version of Frivolesque in my mother tongue online even though I preferred to release the english version first for obvious reasons.
But after three years, it was time for me to get off my ass and get that french version out! Some might have noticed the new little “Français” thing up there in the menu? Just click on it if french is your thing!
Alors si vous parlez français et que vous souhaitiez pouvoir enfin lire Frivolesque dans la langue de Molière, le temps est enfin venu de pouvoir le faire!
Yes !!
I do not speak French, but do applaud your efforts. Your culture is wonderful !!
I do believe the Canadian French will survive – even when the home country is speaking Arabic.
Haha, thank you!
But apparently, many french folks don’t consider our language to be french anymore. -_-
How many man hours did you put into all of that translation? That looks like an epic amount of work.
Pretty much the entire time I took off while your guys were doing your Guest Strips. ;)
The strips were already in french though. I’ve been writing the comic in a bilingual way since the beginning. But the site took ages to make. Reuploading everything, scheduling everything, tagging everything, and translating every page and newspost.
Uuuuhhhhghhghghgh. That sounds tedious. Though smart move that you already had the strips done in both languages.
Out of curiosity, did you translate specifically with a Quebecois audience in mind, or are you aiming for a wider Francophone audience?
I’ll be interested to hear how the two versions perform with traffic, whether the French site will outperform the English one. (If you can even tell that in the metrics.) The English-speaking webcomic readership is (probably) bigger, but I’d also guess that the English-language webcomic market is a heck of a lot more crowded.
Tough question. I guess I tried to have some sort of “in-between” french?
Although French people will still consider it French Canadian, and french Canadians will probably think it’s not natural enough, so there’s no way to win this.
And really, the French site will never outperform the english site. Québécois don’t read webcomics. You have no idea how foreign the concept seems to be when I mention “webcomics” to the more mainstream folks here.
I feel my existence is being questioned…I’m a Montrealer and I’ve been reading webcomics for about 10-15 years (started with PennyArcade)
We’re the minority, I’m sure.
Wow, you even made the guess strips French!
Of course!
Most of the guest artists were bilingual to begin with, and I actually had some in french already. As for the ones who didn’t speak french, I simply asked them if I could translate them myself, and they agreed. :)
Beau travail! :) Je sais pas si j’vais continuer à lire en anglais ou changer au français. J’imagine que les deux version sont équivalentes. Tu me suggères quoi??
Merci!
Bonne question.
