244 – Tall Tales
You didn’t think I’d let the poor kid die, did you? I’m sorry I played with your feelings like that. I’m actually quite happy most people were expecting Gaia to show up… I’m always glad to surprise you guys.

Better to be ninjaed instead of injured.
I actually forgot Saki is a sword-wielding maniac.
Wasn’t that always part of her character?
Her disguise glasses must’ve been too effective on me.
And she’d been without a sword for a long time
What’s so bad about being a sword-wielding maniac, anyway, nyao? Granted, one of my roomies plays with swords, and he’s definitely a maniac…
There’s nothing bad about it. I personally think it’s great. It’s just that Saki’s been caught up with gang’s shenanigans that I forgot about that side of her.
She’s losing her edge.
Of course that’s not how it happened.
Saki only carries her truck splitting katana for specific operations.
Besides, it was really more one-third, two-thirds than equal halves. Not at all the same.
UNEXPECTED!
Okay, two girls from main cast now have little fangirls. No wait, three, if you count Gaia-Eleonore. And they all kinda look like each other? Now there’s a question, will this pattern be completed?
Good point!
I can’t wait to see Laurence’s fangirl.
It might be a fan bear or a fan frog.
I think Laurence can be Flore’s fangirl. It would be weird, but hey, not any weirder than Flore herself.
… *grins*
Now I understand your grand design. Frivolesque is just a backstory for true heroines of your upcoming webcomic – Neon Genesis Frivolesque.
M-N: *doing the Gendo pose* “Chloe, I need you to pilot the Frivogelion”
*drink emerges from nose at high velocity*
No one expected her to die. Get sent to a magic world with cheat powers on the other hand…
That thing again…
You haven’t checked out any isekai manga or anime?
Nah. I don’t watch that many anime to begin with, especially stuff that seems too generic to me.
And this whole thing about “a sad, nerdy, hikkikomori type dies only to be reborn with powers in a world filled with cute anime girls” really creepy somehow. That’s like, the epitome of otaku pandering, the main reason why I (mostly) stopped watching anime to begin with.
How about one where the salaryman protagonist is reincarnated as a little girl and thrust into the midst of war? (Saga of Tanya the Evil)
I kind of expected Gaia, too, in a Full Metal Panic’ish scene, except she stops truck-kun bare-handedly instead of being in a veiled Mecha. But it’s better that Saki gets some spotlight for a change. :-)
I certainly didn’t expect that you’d really want to reduce the characters in the comic by killing of a girl that hadn’t been around all that much to begin with.
As for the property damage: A speeding truck driver deserves it.
I waa thinking more RWBY, but someone using superhuman strength to stop a truck barehandes seems to come up a lot in fiction.
I guess Saki’s methods might make less of a scene, though.
There’s still a big explosion, though.
Destroy all trucks!
But was the truck driver speeding?
It looks to me like Xue wasn’t paying attention to crossing.
You demon mmm…~!
You prevent her realizing her dream of becoming a hero in another world mmm…~!
I’ll really have to get up to date with those recent anime trends, you guys keep talking about those Isekai shows, but I don’t think I’ve heard of a single one of them.
Some noteworthy isekai titles:
Familiar of Zero
Konosuba
No Game No Life
Overlord
Re Zero
Series like Vision of Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth and El Hazard are 1990s examples of isekai anime before the isekai genre was codified.
Some of the more recent isekai anime I have watched are Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, Knights & Magic and In Another World with my Smartphone.
Restaurant to Another World is not exactly an isekai because the Chef never steps out into another world, instead magic doors will appear in this other world once a week and people from that world enter the doors to eat modern cuisine and describe it in detail, in other words, Food Porn with an isekai twist.
What can you expect from the country that brought us Iron Chef? -_^
From that list I only know Escaflowne, El Hazard and Overlord. I especially love El Hazard, because that’s the only one where there is also a bad guy who gets transferred. I only watched the 7 episode version, though, because the 26 ep reboot was not as good.
And there is of course the epic Hubba Hubba Zoot Zoot AMV. XD It features mostly the bad guy, but it generally captures the Anime’s atmosphere so well.
El Hazard is one of my favorite anime of the 90s. <3
(And yes, the original 7-episode OVA series. Everything else after that kinda sucked.)
No mention of Youjo Senki? Tsk, tsk.
Does “Inuyasha” count? (Although the “Other World” that Kagome is transported to is simply Japan’s Sengoku Era, so it may not…)
Familiar of Zero is a bit of an odd one out, in that the male protagonist is simply summoned to that world. Usually they have to die first.
One of the common tropes is some ordinary person is accidentally killed, usually by being run over by a truck (hence truck-kun), something happens in the reincarnation cycle and the character retains his or her memories from his previous life. OP abilities may be added as a bonus compensation if a higher being is involved in the accident. There has been a deluge of variations of this trope. However, my favourite has to be “Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu” which is a light/web novel with english fan translation.
No you don’t…
I’ll admit it would have been a bit out of character for Gaia to do this. It would display too much of her unknown powers as she is a lot more shy than to simply “show off to save someone”. Saki was indeed the right choice and one I’m happy I didn’t see coming.
She would have done something though it she got there first.
Saving lives is something she’s totally into. So maybe killing the driver wouldn’t be her thing, though. :)
Ah yeah, Saki. She’s kind of the logical choice when you think about it, but we didn’t get to see her ninja badassery since the beginning of the comic if I remember correctly. Gaia’s badassery was more in the spotlight as of lately.
She’s been pretending to be some nerdy girl from Vancouver looking for a place to stay in Quebec, remember? Her action antics have been mostly hidden since.
Honestly, the only thing that would have surprised me is if she just died and that would have been it.
You horrible person, you! D:
Nice to see Saki get a chance to be the hero. She’s very much our almost forgotten lady of awesomeness. And….actually…yes I did think that you might have nuked Xue, though I never thought you were being mean about it.
And as an added bonus, Saki now has her own fangirl. (nothing wrong with that)
Yup! Those fangirls are crawling out of the woodwork now.
Yes! We’re even posting in the comments section, nyao! -_^
Hey, I’m really glad no one got injured by a vehicle.
REALLY glad.
Again, probably a bit of PTSD related to getting hit repeatedly for awhile.
Sorry again for that. :(
She turned out fine. It’s just children being hurt is my number one (and I hate the way this word has been used) trigger, and I’ve been hit by cars A LOT… half a dozen times in three years. Summer time (when the Coachella music festival happened) and Winters (when the snow birds would come back to the desert… at least the older folks were more likely to stop than were the presumably out of town concert goers).
Combine those two things and it’s uncomfortable for me.
Still, for the sake of a good story!
*whew* ^^;
Excellent work, Saki!
