118 – Hair
I never really understood why, but it seems like hair is super important for many women.
…
Ah, who am I kidding, my hair is important too. I hope I never go bald like so many other dudes. I like my hair full and healthy.
Enjoy Gaia’s new hairstyle!
And if you don’t, I hope I won’t be receiving too many death threats.
Once again, please vote for me on Top Web Comics. You can vote every day to keep me in the top 100 and increase my visibility! Just click on this link, it’s super easy, and I’d really appreciate it.
And don’t forget to comment, follow me on Twitter or like the Facebook page!
She can always sell it to a cosplay wig maker since natural green hair is kinda hard to come by.
It’s a good idea!
Not to mention profitable!
I am not normally a female who worries abou her hair, I have the mentality of ‘it’s just hair, it’ll grow back’ which is good couse I love dying it and things like that, though at the moment I am trying to grow it out… we’ll ee how that pans out, I haven’t had long hair for about 10 years… -.-‘
I got two questions, one, why was Gaia carrying scissors around? and two, why does her hair look so short in the back when it should still be at least shoulder length going by where the scissors are in the 3rd panel?
MAGIC.
Yep, magic, with a bit of cartoon logic.
Cartoon logic is often at work in Frivolesque.
“why was Gaia carrying scissors around?”
And where?
“why does her hair look so short in the back”
If she cut it above the ribbon is pretty consistent with the first panel, second and third have the ribbon lower, but yeah still too close to the headband.
The remained hair retracted in fear, perhaps?
Well, if she use Urabe Mikoto style I would not complain :P
Yeah, retracted and hided themselves under the red headband =)
:)
I’m going to imagine that she rearranged her hair in her jogging style before cut it (between panels) ;)
Gaia likes running with scissors.
I’m pretty sure that that is Marie-Neige :)
There’s a reason for the first question.
And I guess my crappy art is to blame for the second question. I wanted her to cut her hair at the back of her head, but it was hard to draw while still conveying the same thing with the images. So I guess she just ended up cutting things higer between the two panels. :P
I knew someone would point this out.
Not at all crappy. There’s always the necessity to balance continuity details, POVs, action flow, effectiveness, and so. Sometimes is impossible to have it all. Don’t worry about it :)
In my opinion the problem is when the artist don’t care about or even notice continuity. If you were aware of it and did a choice, is totally fine. Many artist use to straight remark it when a trade was done, which is a good thing so the readers don’t need to wonder ;)
Personally, I always had short hair for most of my existence, but they’re starting to grow past my shoulders… and I kind of like it? Yeah, growing hair out is a long and tedious process, especially with a mother who always places appointments to the hairdresser for me the second she dislikes it.
I had no idea you were a female. Not that it changes anything, but I really thought all the commenters here were dudes. :)
But yeah, growing your hair is quite a long commitment.
I honestly hope you’re joking about thinking all your commenters are guys ^-^’
I tend to get about shoulder leanth and end up chopping it off again cause I can’t do anything with it ^-^’
I’m not!
I know I have many female readers, but I was wondering why so few of them ever commented the comic…
I’m surprised as well then ^-^’
Well, Jacob did say that he is not normally a female.
lol
A great tip for cutting (medium/long) hair if you wanna do it yourself but have no skills is to wash them, comb them, hold them all together above your head and cut. Makes for a nice layered haircut. :)
Help, Dina is invading Frivolesque.
I wonder if she and Flore could be friends.
But yeah, somebody told me about this tip before.
I come to you from the dumbiverse and its bountiful comment section where it was suggested to check this out. :3 I read your entire comic and I really love it! ^^ I look forward to seeing where the characters will go from there. Also, heh, funny, one of the characters has the same name that was my nickname for a long time. Yay coincidences. :3
Can you really complain about a Dina invasion though? XD I’m sure the two could be friends. As long as Flore isn’t bothered by long informative monologues about dinosaurs. XD
Ah, another to roam into these lands from the fields of the Dumbingverse. Long ago, the Mongoose of the Plasma variety brought many over, including myself. Greetings friend, enjoy the webcomic…
..Soon you’ll learn to spot the fellow Dumbingverse traveler by their comments… :P
Oh, greetings fellow roamer! ^^ I really do enjoy seeing people from DoA (first webcomic I ever read ahah) on other comics. It gives me an awesome sense of community and it makes me feel like my memory maybe isn’t that terrible if I can recognise gravs and usernames. :3
Hey, no problemo :P. It’s been said I’m famous over there, guess they don’t have too many Mincons running around there, according to someone’s greeting to a newcomer :P.
Either way, enjoy the laughs, & maybe even read the comic… :p
I recognized you immediately by your username, haha. ^^ I haven’t really been active in DoA’s comment section long enough to know who’s “famous”, other than Jen Aside and Plasma Mongoose.
Thanks. ^ Though I did read the comic. ^^ You didn’t read my second comment in this thread very thoroughly, huh? Can’t blame you, I do that too sometimes, haha. :3
I love Technicolor London
DoA was your first? How’d you come across it?
Until I found xkcd the concept of webcomics had never really occurred to me.
Oh right, xkcd! Forgot about that one! My dad got me into that one years ago cause he kept showing me all his favourite ones.
As for DoA, a friend put up a link of that strip where Joyce is looking up what the Bible really says about homosexuality and I found it interesting. And more importantly I had time to waste. So I went and read the whole thing from the start because I didn’t quite understand the strip’s context. And now I’m addicted. XD What about you? :3
I found DoA from another comic’s links page. Not QC, because I was amused to discover Jeph’s butt-infested listings of Willis comics. Maybe Girls with Slingshots? I recognized his style from Shortpacked, since I started that a few times without getting far. Gotta get around to reading the rest of the Walkyverse for context one of these days.
So my progression to Frivolesque was something like xkcd -> Questionable Content -> Sam and Fuzzy -> Girls with Slingshots -> Dumbing of Age -> Frivolesque, arriving a little after Mongoose linked it. The network of discoveries is much broader and longer than that, but this is only one endpoint. It’s safe to say that I read too many webcomics.
Damn, this discussion makes me realize that I’m so old I can’t remember what was the first webcomic I’ve read… and the ones I recall don’t exist anymore :(
I share the sentiment, really.
Userfriendly was my first.
I think I didn’t discovered there were other webcomics until a year later. And then it quickly grew to dozens, then hundreds.
My bookmarks have an unbroken line from my first browser on my own computer, so I actually have the “added” date for practically every comic I’ve ever read. (And a great many I never started on)
Come to think of it, I should add this comic. If only to keep my records in order. :P
If anyone cares to know, Penny-Arcade was where I started. :)
I’m not really sure which was the first webcomic I started reading, but Avalon (Josh Philips) and MegaTokyo come to mind.
I wonder if David Willis himself ever checked Frivolesque out…
The Willis is omnipotent *_*
I wonder how much.
Could there be a scale to measure omnipotence? If so, how to calculate the gaps between different degrees of omnipotence? D:
<ifeubgoqh ERROR 404
√2
The Willis is a bellend who obsesses over crappy plastic robots.
He could die in a fire for all I care.
Well, RIP Gaia’s hair.
…unless it grows back next week?
Yeah, I’m expecting that to be one of her genetic enhancements.
* fingers crossed *
Ain’t gonna say anything.
I just realized that now Gaia will resemble Phoebe even more. I wonder if this will have an aftermath.
Phoebe’s hair actually looks a bit like Chloe’s, but longer…
She even has the same ridiculous hair antenna / cowlick thing.
Flashbacks. We can always treasure flashbacks.
AAAAAAAAAARGH! Noooo!!!! Why!!!???
Sorry.
It’s ok :) I love her long hair and it suits her personality, but I like short hair too, actually short short is really attractive :)
Also I think that the real thing is that you liked Furiosa too much :P
that was pretty much my reaction as well. :/
Don’t hate me, you guys.
Hate the scissors, not the artist.
“it seems like hair is super important for many women”
Long hair not doubt is, to any gender, and with good reasons. According your chart Gaia’s hair is (was) at the very least 2 feet and a half, or 30 inches (around 76cm). At average rate it would take like 6 year to grow back.
Marie-Neige must know that well. Poor girl is going to need a big Bubble Tea.
“I hope I won’t be receiving too many death threats”
Oh please, don’t be naive, I don’t think anybody would do that :)
Attempts on the other hand…
BTW, Église Saint-Roch, nicely done :)
Gaia’s hair was even more longer than Marie-Neige. It looked a bit shorter because it’s always tied, but it looked way more impressive in the few strips where it was down.
And wow, again, you recognized something.
It was clearly longer than M-N :)
Oh, yes, impressive indeed, I almost had a fangasm reading Pattern :P
Little merit. When I wandered around that area the church caught my attention and here you drew it as realistic as everything else :)
i’m amazed you looked up the info needed and did the math.
Heh :)
Actually I already had the info, I stumbled on the average hair grow rate years ago (5 inches a year), also I often check Dez Facebook so I knew the chart and the measures it shows.
The math is not so hard: 30 % 5 = 6
Voilà ;P
I would have to say that M-N’s faces in panels 3 and 4 are the best reaction faces I seen since DoA’s Joyce discovered that Dotty was an atheist.
LOL. Thanks. You flatter me so.
wish i could see the comic in question. those DoA archives look awfully big though
Here is the comic in question.
What a face. It’s like the one my sister gave me when I told her I was an atheist. She spun around in shock and exclaimed “you mean you worship the devil!!” And i was like, “No Sis, I don’t believe the Devil exists either…”
People love to oversimplify things.
i’m afraid to be honest about my feelings towards this shocking development. i love seeing women with long hair. i appreciate it has to be maintained, and that it’s not for everyone, but i think it’s a great way for a woman to stand out. please be grow back quickly Gaia’s hair…. i’m with Marie-Neige. :( aaAAA
I’m sorry…
Well, there’s still Marie and Clementine that have long hair for you.
Cutting ponytail is way too softcore, how about half-shaved hairstyle? =) Maybe outside storyline, like a stand-alone art, eh? =)
Heeeh. I don’t know if Gaia would go that far…
Could be awesome, though :)
Cutting ponytails in Equestria on the other hand would be pretty hard-core.
She was planning on cutting her hair but was just waiting for someone to bring it up so she could freak them out.
That’s why she had those scissors with her.
haha! i knew it! jk
Gaia secretly loves shocking people while acting oblivious to their shock.
I could see that
Well…that was different. Aside from the scissors appearing out of nowhere, it’s strange that Gaia is so casual about it considering how long it takes to grow hair that long (makes me wonder if it’s Marie-Neige’s weird nightmare or something) Anyway it’s quite the change, but I hope that Gaia eventually grows it back. She looks awesome with long hair.
I think Gaia looks awesome no matter her hairstyle.
And there’s actually a reason for the scissors, you’ll see later I’m sure.
You are right about Gaia. Certainly Cloe is a great example that short hair works beautifully. Love Marie-Neige’s response. I wonder if she found Gaia’s hair attractive, or was it because she knew all the trouble getting hair that long is.
About Marie-Neige’s reaction, you’re right on both accounts.
And Chloe would be very happy to know you like her short hair.
I think I just died a little….
Nooo I’m sorry…
Wow, so many upset people about the cut hair. I guess many Humans do worry about their hair…
I’m just fond of long hair on women.
It seems I’m the only guy on earth who prefers short hair on girls.
Nope. I love long hair in general, but short hair on girls is great.
For starters, it exposes the back of the neck, providing new opportunities when cuddling.
Depends on where on a girl …
Although I bet some could totally rock a beard.
Before I got to the last panel, I was kind of expecting Gaia’s hair to break the scissors.
Haha!
It could have been funny!
Who wrote this? It’s just the sort of thing I’ve been looking for!
!!
(qui a ecrit cela? c’est tout a fait ce que j’ai cherchais)
gah!!! Her new hair is gonna be so cute. Brush it out a bit and it will be so adorable and spunky.
I knew you’d like it. ;)
Ok, I need to be honest. I don’t like “cheeky mouths” :(
Admittedly you scarcely use it and if so in a slight way, but this time it seems more obvious than other occasions and actually bothers me a little. Sorry.
In the other hand I’m aware that you are doing it as part of an art style.
The Cheeky Mouth trope in question.
* Warning* Plasma’s post include a TV Tropes link, click it under your own social life risk.
I have long since developed a resistance to TVTropes in that I can click on a TVT link and leave it after a few minutes, but I have been known to archive binge there on the rare occasion.
I don’t know how you can resist the site’s power.
I for one cannot.
Is it weird that I don’t even notice cheeky mouths?
Not at all :) I almost don’t notice it in anime either, or at least I’m able to switch it off.
It’s in manga or comics in general that I find it glaring out of place. Maybe is that my subconscious accepts the time saving reason in animation, while in comics is just because. Dunno.
I don’t really notice it outside of anime either. XD I didn’t even know it was cost cutting thing, I just assumed it was part of an art style, haha. I’ve drawn lots of cheeky mouths because I have trouble with the angle of the jaw when drawing open mouths. That, and the mouth shape is more fun to draw for me if it doesn’t have to be attached to the lips. It can look really weird when you think about it, but on first look it’s cute imo. :3
Meh. I’m sorry. Sometimes, they just look kinda cute. :(
And easy to draw too.
Odd. Normally I react exactly as M-N did, but I don’t mind this time, and not just because Gaia looks great with that cut. Maybe it’s because she’s a fictional character and not one of my friends.
She does look great.
I just read, what a pity about your tablet :( Good luck, hope you manage to fix it.
I have to quickly buy another one. Maybe I could do a fundraiser. :)
Frivolesque is back in the Top 100.
Now it’s 101st -_-
Surprisingly nonchalant with the hair. Long hair takes a lot care, longer times to wash and comb and dry, if someone doesn’t care about why would they put up with this whole time, one may ask. On the other hand hair grows slowly and maybe she just didn’t notice the extra care needed as it increased very gradually and then continued to grow it out of habit… Hmm, who knows?
Gaia seems to me like the type who wouldn’t care either way what her hair looks like. And so her cutting her hair is just a matter of practicality, it wouldn’t even occur to her that it’s sort of a waste because of past efforts. That’s what I’m getting from her at least. ^^
pretty much. she’s a carefree individual. :)
Yay, I understood a character’s personality correctly! \o/ I tend to project too much of myself on others, which can make me badly misunderstand their motivations and stuff.
You’re pretty good!
But yeah, I know what you mean.
I’m the same sometimes.
Granted my hair gets pretty long because I’m too lazy to cut it (nit quite THAT long though)
* not
I’m a lazy bum too.
I don’t think anyone who puts out a comic of this quality on such a regular schedule can truly qualify as a lazy bum.
…speaking of which, shouldn’t there be a new page up?
once i’ve cut my own hair and i regret it xD
it was 2 feet long and need around 3 years to grow it xD
well my reaction on this:
http://pre03.deviantart.net/5b82/th/pre/f/2015/202/1/a/reaction__by_oshirockingham-d928p9r.jpg
RIP Oshi’s hair.
actually it was 2 years ago xD now my hair is at shoulder-length :)
You need hair to keep the spirit of metal alive.
I had shoulder-length hair for years. One day got bored of it and shaved my head. Then grew them back in two and a half year. Then did braids. Then cut it all again to mid-short. In a nutshell I did metalhead, skinhead, rasta then regular cut. Hairs are fun :3
you could try a Lain hair cut. http://s219.photobucket.com/user/jjpeebody/media/SerialExperimentsLain.jpg.html
cropped a little short, with one long braid on one side. i think a page cut with a long braid on one side would be cool too.
Easy, I just lack the one braid to achieve that serial hairxperiment B)
Crazy.
I had like three different hairstyle in my life.
1980s hair, then long, either in a metal or nerdtail style, then my current hairstyle. -__-
Oh, man, her hair was so pretty. Maybe shell keep the ponytails as a souvenir. Only death threat you’ll be getting is about reminding me I have a bald spot since my early twenties. ;_;
Aw. But don’t worry, you’re not the only one.
This treads got 99 comments, but a Mimi comment ain’t one.
Nobody even mentioned her!
I know! not one person said how cute she was! well, i will. Mimi is the cutest character around. um, i hope she’s good at catching fainting women.
I wouldn’t say it is just girls.
It is a matter of time and length.
People with super fast-growing hair or exceedingly short hair probably wouldn’t care so much.
On the other hand people like myself… well, my hair took about 4 years to get past shoulder length, and it hasn’t got any longer since then. The idea of losing it is frankly horrifying.
I die a little in side when every beautiful long hair is cut. at least 37 dead versions of each of my 8 head council members lay in a room in my heart
Aw.
But Gaia’s hair was messy, and not really beautiful at all.
Messy hair is beautiful.
If Gaia regenerates, would not her hair grow back at an increased rate as well?
Maybe.
But definitely not in the span of a few hours.
NOOOO! I loved Gaia’s hair!
Hopefully this doesn’t affect her like it did Samson!
