71 – Observations
Behold what I consider to be the most elaborate Frivolesque strip so far.
There’s a lot of places in Quebec City that I find inspiring, but none are more fascinating to me than the The Saint-Roch area, with its stark contrast between its (kinda) high-rise downtown district and the decrepit streets surrounding it.
I made Gaia (with Saki now) live on one of these streets in order to have an excuse to draw the whole neighborhood whenever I felt like it.
Those backgrounds look like they took 90% of the time and effort it took to finish this strip. well done!
They sure did. -_-
Thanks!
Cuties!!
The backgrounds look like they took forever but they are amazing.
I wonder why I even bother with backgrounds. ^^
But it’s nifty when they look nice!
Bravo! En effet le background est très bien réussi, je reconnais facilement la rue!!
Les petites rues de Saint-Roch! :)
Ok, I tried to find the street depicted on panel three. I did a quick tour with Google Street View and I did not find it but it was funny so I want to keep trying :)
However, just in case I want to check. I did the following assumptions about the portion of the street that is shown:
– It is actually inside the Saint-Roch area as it is shown when you search “Saint-Roch, Quebec” inside Google Maps.
– It is south of Rue du Prince-Édouard
– It is west of Rue de la Couronne.
– It is facing west (sunset)
Could you please point out whichever is wrong? If so please do not tell me the right answer, ok? ;)
Thanks :)
Actually… the street actually faces North. I kinda suck with sun orientations and lighting, so don’t trust the sunset too much.
Sky shouldn’t be as pink I’m sure…
But you are right about the three other points. :)
It’s quite close to the Fanamanga too, as a hint, and it’s not a major street.
Thank you, sir! Annnnnd… there it is! :D Wow, Olivia was right, it is totally recognizable :) With everything and graffiti.
(je dois admettre que je pensais que ce était une exagération. Mademoiselle, Monsieur, j’ai eu tort et je vous présente toutes mes excuses.)
And two blocks backward we have panel three :) Great!
Thank to the Fanamanga hint actually cause I was wrong in “west of Rue de la Couronne” too.
That was lots of fun, like being inside the comic, I would not be surprised if a blur of green had crossed the intersection. Or spotting DEZ on a folding stool, drawing :P
I’m for more. You said Gaia’s apartament is findable too, right? Is it that in panel four?
OOOPS. I totally read “east” there. Sorry. (and it’s monsieur! I’m a dude!)
I could technically appear on these photos too, I work in the area. ;)
There’s actually some pictures of the Frivolesque girls in my office, and some readers from around here actually noticed them from outside.
Panel 4 features the same power station seen in panel 3. Gaia’s apartment hasn’t appeared yet, but we see the building across the street from it. ( http://frivolesque.com/archives/comic/bonds )
There’s no way one can find this on the map though, we can barely see anything in that strip…

I know :) “mademoiselle” intended to be for Olivia, and “monsieur” for you, did I mess up the grammar?
I could technically appear on these photos too
That would be sooooo meta :)
Panel 4 features the same power station…
I see, that is the wire fence, I thought it was a wall with tiles like some building facades :)
Gaia’s apartment hasn’t appeared yet,
Oh well, then I will just wander aronund a bit, I guess ;)
Very impressive background work there sir. And I like seeing these characters again. Gaia is quite cute, though she is very odd.
Don’t worry, no character is gonna vanish anytime soon. :)
And Gaia is quite odd indeed.
Everyone already said this, but I’ll say it too the backgrounds seem pretty sophisticated, good thing you only post these once a week ^_^ I like the different soda cans on top of the cupboard
Man, you noticed the cans! :)
There’s a few old gems in there. :)
And I wish I could post more…
Forgot her hair was that long, looks pretty like that.
Yeah! It looks longer whan she wears it in such a high ponytail! She usually keeps it tied low.
I love St-Roch so much :)
Me too. It’s my home turf. (almost. I live in Limoilou, but I work in Saint-Roch)
So, are you a new reader? =D
Who is that cat ?
I’d love to sniff its butt and find out.
