233 – Generations
It’s Mimi’s birthday! Making her the only character so far to get older in the comic proper. (Even though some other birthdays from the bios came and went without notice. I should try to keep track of this stuff.) She’s 10 now.
So that means it’s February 14th in-universe! Yes, it’s Valentine’s day as well. No wonder everybody loves Mimi.
You might have seen that little girl before, she’s a school friend of Mimi and she popped in a few backgrounds before, but who’s that mysterious man in the left corner of the first panel? Could he be… MIMI’S DAD? This makes me realize there’s four male characters in there, an all-time record for Frivolesque so far!

Being so nice must have aged her.
Then she’d look like a grandma now…
Chloe as GILF confirmed! ^_^
Ah yes, a Girl I’d Like to Friend. >.>
As the oldest brother of three,, I do have friends that have achieved a weird sort of elder and legendary status… mainly from brief encounters and tales of adventures.
And yes, as an elder brother type, I have been relegated to an “as old as dad” status for some.
Give it time. ^_^
I mean, my niece used to think her grandmother and I were about the same age – and married. Give the kids time to grow older and gain greater understanding…
Kids can’t really tell adults apart. XD
It was also because of a linguistic quirk.
Our word for “grandma” and the usual kiddy-contraction of “uncle” and my name sound pretty similar. ^_^ Seeing as her grandfathers weren’t in the picture, she never had cause to say “grandpa”, and she drew a semi-logical conclusion.
It’s the glasses, mom…
“So, how do you get an adult friend?” – “Easy, you just assault random stranger in the street with sudden friendship, and climb on their shoulders while they are staggered.”
By the way, I’m glad you’re aging your characters, despite having a sliding timescale.
I always try to keep track of time regardless. Like the seasona that changed along the chapters.
Oof… ^_^; The honesty of children can be hard to deal with sometimes.
But it’s so perfect for making funny comics.
Chloe biting the fork while crying… makes me think she’ll be back at her place eating ice cream while thinking “I’m not THAT old!” XD
She’ll eat all the cake at least.
If this keeps up, Chloé is going to get a complex. :)
I wonder what’s Xue’s reference for what a mom should look like? To me, Chloé looks, acts, dresses, and has the figure of an older sister rather than a mom. Obviously Xue hasn’t watched enough ’50s sitcoms to recognize Agnes’ model for how a mom should look. Mimi even seems to wear stuff more like “big sister” Chloé wears. Most kids that age would be embarrassed to match mom.
Maybe she’s going by their glasses. ;)
So what if Chloé and Agnes swap glasses? Maybe not. We’ve seen the strange effects other glasses can have on people here. Then again, what if Agnes and Xue swap glasses? Retro-Xue? :)
Who knows? Sky’s the limit! :D
My wife often gets mistaken as my daughter’s older sister.
On another note, I laughed soooooooooo much harder than I really should’ve at this strip.
Some people one thought my mom was my sister or my wife. So weird.
the way Felix looks at Chloé, I guess he wants that cake! :D

I understand the coming and going (unnoticed) of birthdays in comics. For the reader, a year has past, meanwhile time has progressed 48-72 hours in the story. In three years we may even be a week through an event that theoretically now took place three years ago. That’s why I avoid doing birthdays and time markers, makes it less awkward.
Do you have a ‘calendar’ for where you are in a story, or do you just keep it loose?
I have a calendar indeed. Well, a timeline at least. It’s still a sliding timeline, though. I don’t want the girls to be stuck in 2013. (Or 2014 since they already passed January)
Merry Christmas everyone!
And just outside of panel three Ben’s thinking/hoping “Not yet ..”
