219 – Fixation
Seems like Marie has already decided Gaia would look better in glasses, taking advantage of her awesome adaptative powers. Will the Frivoverse allow it?

Silly Gaia, even a 100% blind person can tell you how many of their own fingers they are holding up, unless they suffer from.Alien Limb Syndrome, but knowing Gaia, she might have that.
I’ve heard of people who can’t control their hands, but never knew how this sickness is called. Guess the name fits pretty well.
I don’t think Gaia has this problem though.
Alien Hand Syndrome, when a part of your Human body seems to move by itself, with no conscious thought behind it, such as reaching out & grabbing things…
I’m being taught Google-Fu… :P

Don’t you think this is the kind of logic that fits Gaia’s character?
Yup! ^_^
You could argue that M-N should have ordered Gaia fake glasses with plain lenses, but we know that such thing is forbidden in Frivoverse.
But at least, they can have some fun making her try on different rims.
Yeah, I was about to argue that as well. And even if plain lenses were forbidden (which I don’t remember being established), there’d be no need to use Saki’s prescription of all things. M-N could very well use her own instead.
Saki’s is stronger!
My point exactly. M-N’s is weaker than Chloé’s, too, so why use the strongest ones?
More nearsighted = cuter in Marie’s mind?
I think she secretly loves the idea of perfect Gaia having a flaw like that. (even if she doesn’t really have it.)
I see, yeah it makes sense from the perspective of someone like M-N. :-)
Dez once stated that no one in Frivolesque is wearing fake glasses, though it was never published in English, I think.
The fact no one in the main cast does it doesn’t mean there can’t be a girl somewhere doing it because she thinks it’s cute.
Just get lenses that change depending on the amount of light available.
Transition lenses? Oh, I dislike them so much.
Eh, I paid extra to get Transition lenses and I’m not regreting it a second. Pretty useful if you always misplace your sunglasses.
Or even better: Get lenses that turn black whenever danger impends, so you won’t have to see anything stressful. (Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (don’t watch the movie))
Ugh. I didn’t like the movie either. Alan Rickman was TOTALLY wasted as Marvin, and Mark Wing-Davies will always be Zaphod to me. Although Zooey Dechannel as Trillian was actually better casting IMHO than Sandra Dickinson, so it wasn’t completely horrible…
I was actually referring to the plot, because it was almost completely different from the book or the series and it looks like an American completely failed to understand British humor and replaced it with crappy shallow jokes. Also:
The original has no standard plot point of Marvin dying/not dying.
The original has no “make you understand”-gun.
The original doesn’t use the towel to beat up Vogons. It’s used for something related to warp-jumps.
The original has no Vogons capturing Zaphod or being tricked by a closed fence.
The original does NOT elaborate on why Trillian went with Zaphod at that party. It doesn’t even elaborate on the party at all.
The original jabs at earth’s politics when Arthur’s house was to be flattened, instead of giving snacks to the workers.
And MOST importantly: Deep Thought is NOT a stupid cartoon fetishist who throws out the “42” answer in a way that ruins the joke as fucking much as possible!
The movie was so abysmally bad I didn’t have any nerves left to look at how well the actors were doing or the graphics and sound. They really should’ve just taken out the last few seconds of plot that remained from the original, renamed all the characters and created a movie with a different name from that. Then I would’ve appreciated it as a more or less ok space movie.
Ah yeah, H2G2 the movie. I kinda liked it, but probably only because I never went around to find the original book to read.
I see that we agree on my last point. :-)
If you don’t have the time to read the books, try finding the 6 20-minute episodes from the 80s. They’re quite close to the original and I like their minimalistic special effects.
Every version of the Hitchhiker’s guide is different. The radio show is different from the books, is different from the TV series, is different form the movies. Just the way Douglas Adams liked it.
With that in mind the movie was fine.
The only reason I don’t have transition lenses is the cost.
I think she mostly likes the idea of Gaia needing those Glasses. (even though it only lasts while she’s wearins them)
I used to be similar to that… give me 30 seconds and my eyes would adjust.
Now, however, I can’t wear any kind of glasses, because if they’re where’ they’re supposed to be, my eyes refuse to adjust anymore. Even 3D glasses for the theater… I have to wear them on the very tip of my nose for them to work, otherwise they’re too close.
I may have pulled the Gaia glasses thing too much as a kid. My mom’s vision was 20/400 back then.
3D glasses are probably the most annoying thing ever. I’m glad that fad is finally dying out.
They worked differently for everyone, it seemed. For me the effect only worked on slow moving pictures because I needed time to adapt all the time. VR glasses totally work for me, though (but it’s a similar fad).
Both are pretty similar, but in VR, the screen is directly inside the glasses, next to your eyes, instead of being several feet away. Might be why it works better.
Ah, VR makes me overwhelmingly claustrophobic. I can’t focus my eyes properly (probably because everything is literally right in front of me) and I feel cut off from literally everything with things I can’t properly see happening.
I’m not claustrophobic at all in the normal world.
Also, some movies in 3D are pretty awesome. I really enjoyed watching Pacific Rim at home in 3D, for example.
That’s one that I watched on my tv in 3D too, worked well for me.
The video game Sine Mora (which is a 2.5D shmup with 3D support in some versions) also worked well because of its slow moving backgrounds. The tv was like a window to another world in that one.
I noticed two typos:
“anyore” –> “anymore”
“I’m fine, now” –> “I’m fine now,”
Also now that I think about it, there’s probably no need for a comma in “returning to normal, now”, either.
I guess someone needs to start wearing glasses, too. :-P
It might be a beginning of a new phrase, like “…returning to normal, now let’s get some drink” or something.
Fixed all of those. Thanks!
You’re welcome. :) Btw: In panel 1 there is yet another of those “comma before ‘now'” things, but that one might kinda work if you want to emphasize the now as an impatient command and not as a polite whine. I’m not sure if it’s covered by grammar, though.
I mean everyone looks better with glasses.
For me it’s hard to see someone look uglier in glasses, if they are, then they’re just wearing wrong type of glasses.
Agree 100% when it comes to women. ;)
Aha! I KNEW I wasn’t the only one who thought Gaia was cuter in glasses!
She does look very cute with glasses. But without glasses she often reminds me a bit of Grace (EGS), which gives an additional cuteness bonus.
How about having reform criminals.
Nice use of “evil thoughts glasses glare” in panel 3, BTW. The otaku in me heartily approves.
Will the Frivoverse allow it? Probably not. Gaia is the token glasses-less girl.
No one noticed you put oshirockinghams ladies in the background in some of these strips?
