Another comic with the kids!
Seems like Chloe has been sharing her old favorite movies with little Mimi lately. She sure knows more about late 20th century pop culture than her friends do.

Dudes, you have internet! Even I knew what the Terminator was at that age, and I was a bookbound introvert!
Oh well. Just means they get to experience the full effect when they get around to seeing the movie.
The first 3 movies are worth watching, the last 2 though not so much. Ok maybe Genisys is worth a try since Arnold is starring in it.
Ew, no, T3 totally blew.
As far as I’m concerned, there’s only two movies in the Terminator franchise.
Terminator 3 is a bad Terminator movie, but it’s not a terrible movie in general. It’s just in comparison to the first two movies that it isn’t so good at all.
It’s kind of like Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It’s the worst of the Mad Max movies, but it’s by no means a bad movie in and of itself (and is probably better than T3 in that regard).
I enjoyed Salvation, despite it lacking significant roles of any of the previous movies. I actually really like Genisys (despite its flaws), but one thing that bothered me A LOT… Kyle Reese in that movie was not the desperate fighter for humanity at the end of days; he was way too well fed and fit, and didn’t display ANY of the kind of desperate intensity that Biehn had in the role originally. The new actor did not portray him in the way I felt like he should be (nor in the way he was in 1 or 4).
Still, I’m skeptical about lack of knowledge of Terminators… I mean, even 6 year olds in my apartment complex know what a Terminator is.
T3 wasn’t horrible, but it served no purpose overall. It pretty much invalidated the second movie, which never flew right with me, and didn’t really lead anywhere. The “Skynet is inevitable” message it had left a bad taste in my mouth.
Salvation was fun because it was different. I don’t get why people hate it that much. Never saw Genisys.
And well, I guess I could have picked a more obscure franchise. :(
Maybe Phantasm?
Do yourself a favor: SKIP Genisys. Although you may want to watch it for yourself to make a personal opinion, it nullifies even further the first two movies (never referencing 3 and 4, one of them being not a bad idea to ignore) and never establishes a strong connection. It flopped for a good reason, and probably killed the franchise.
It flopped?
I didn’t know, though to be fair, the nearest theater is an almost 200 mile round trip drive from my home. I haven’t seen a movie in a very long time. I only know about movies when Amazon recommends me the Blurays.
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
I still thought the first half (okay, maybe the second, third, and fourth eighths of the movie) where we were revisiting the original Terminator in a new way, with parts from the second movie, was really cool.
Of course, bar having a driver’s license, it seems very likely that the cops in the second half would assume I’m a terrorist, since I lack a social media presence, don’t use a smartphone or even a phone that can be tracked (the best unbreakable phone didn’t have GPS) and the like.
But yeah, I realize the franchise is probably dead… the ending also… it didn’t make much sense and required some additional suspension of disbelief for a number of reasons… clearly they had to tie up a few things in short order.
Anyway, I figured the franchise probably was over with 2 when I saw it as a teen in the theater, but of course 3 is explained by the necessity of Judgement Day happening for continued Terminator movies to be made.
It makes sense, but we don’t have to like it. I kinda felt like 3 made more sense than Genisys, even.
As much as I hate to admit it, as garbage as the 3rd movie was, you’re right. 3 made (little) more sense. Although Salvation was my favorite of the three sequels because we finally got to see the war against the machines, albeit in a “not too apocalyptic world”.
I think the part that bothered me about Genisys was why Skynet would even still bother to destroy humanity. Humanity stopped being a threat to it when they surrendered to smart phones and social networking.
I kind of liked T3, although it cloned T2 too much, but the ending felt original instead of the usual happy conclusion.
Yeah. T3’s ending was the only thing I liked about the movie. I never saw it coming, and I was all… “wait, what? We’re going there?”
It didn’t redeem the movie for me, but it made it not the turd I thought it would be.
If you like that stuff, you should read the trilogy of books that were made, which take place post T2 (and which the movies kind of borrow from) starting with T2: Infiltrator
There were only two moments I liked in Terminator 3. First, the way the bad guy was defeated, and second, when the end credits played, and the Terminator theme started playing.
Personally, I’d say T1 and T2 are the best, and Salvation was worth it for moving the franchise in new territory. The rest is forgettable garbage.
We have the same opinion!
I’m a sentient alien robot & even I know what a “Terminator” is. I so wanna get myself a Cyberdyne Systems model 101. Make it my bodyguard, never have to worry about my safety again…
Are these kids lack of pop culture knowledge based on real life kids you know, Dez?
Kind of. XD
Kids not knowing what Terminator is makes ne feel old.
Apparently some friends of Daniel the Human know kids who didn’t know what a Pikachu was…
Please tell me it’s not based on real-life event? Even kids should know about Terminator… I mean… if we forget about Skynet and machine threat… aren’t we doomed already? =(
I noticed a lot of young people (and not just kid) don’t know about things that my Generation really loved. But I guess Terminator is a bit far-fetched considering they keep trying to bring the franchise back. :P
Maybe red eyes and being a grump are recessive traits. Use the power of the punnett square kids!
Is it just me, or does the Asian girl with the glasses in the background of the first panel have a lot more detail than the other kids (aside from Mimi)? Is there a reason for this?
I guess I’m just addicted to character design. That’s all. She even has a name!
As for the other kids, Felix isn’t bad looking, is he? I thought he was well detailed too. David is the only one with a ridiculous character design because that’s how I first drew him and it stuck. :)
Felix is quite ok detail-wise, though i guess readers might peg him as sort of “the token black kid” of the comic or somesuch. And i might be seeing things, but the background glasses girl in panel one looks like some sort of Saki-Mimi , or maybe Saki-Clementine, kid hybrid to me. XD
Yeah, I feel like there’s some tokenism involved with him, but I really don’t know how to fix this. You don’t have all that many people of color here in Quebec City, and most black kids tend to hang out together, so it would have actually been more realistic to have Felix as a white boy, but I need more diversity in this.
It’s a bit of a “damn if I don’t, damn if I do” situation. But oh well. I like Felix, he’s the first thing that popped into my mind when I was thinking of ideas for Mimi’s friends. :)
I guess I’ll add here that I think Xue looks super adorable.
Dez, given how much this comic is inspired by Japanimation, any chance that Iapetus, Phoebe and possibly Gaia are scouts for the imminent Zentraedi invasion like the Robotech cartoon series warned us about back in the late 80’s ?)
Oh boy. Those are old school references.
Don’t worry though. I was never into Robotech much. XD
You know… as someone who has only now started watching Macross 7, I think back to how I used to get my Japnimation in the late 80s and early 90s… VHS video tapes recorded directly from Japanese TV with [awesome] commercials and everything. Subtitles? What are those?
I also remember watching Macross Plus and Macross II on Laser disc. How cool were laser discs?
Now? I used google and about two minutes later I was watching the first episode of Macross 7 streaming over the internet.
What amazing times we live in now. Modern Anime fans would have no idea how to cope back then.
MIles, if you think that’s hard – try learning a completely new language just so that you can follow your favourite hockey team in a region where their games are blocked out in your native tongue… I can completely understand a hockey game in French but I can only say the contents of a church in French fluently (Which means that I can swear like a local…)*
* – Still haven’t stopped cursing the Calgary Flames for their ’89 Stanley Cup win…
Good punchline. And very accurate. That is my life as a high school teacher: making cultural refs that are always a bit too old for anyone in my audience to get.
I feel you.
And it’s only gonna get worse from now on.
Don’t remind me!
I have to go get caught up on my dank memes so I can understand anything the kids say in September.
This totally happened to me, but with music. My 4-year older brother loved listening to popular music from a young age where I was just playing with toys, but since we got along well I inherited a lot of knowledge about music and artists that were maybe a little from before my age/time. I sometimes still manage to surprise people with it whenever there’s some trivia. ;-)
It’s always cool when someone is into the things the previous generation was into.
