Everything seems so easy for Gaia. Music seemed like the next natural step.
I gotta admit, I only went for a Cœur de Pirate (a french-canadian indie pop singer) song because she made two different versions of it, Carry On in english and Oublie moi in french. That worked quite nicely with my newly bilingual webcomic. Also, my girlfriend is a big fan.

And we learn later that Gaia was Coeur de Pirate’s ghostwriter all along.
I don’t think she’s that talented.
Come on Saki don’t be jealous. I’m sure she’s not a better assassin than you.
or is she?! *Inception Horn SFX*
Gaia is so sweet.
Gaia can’t wear glasses for genuine medical purposes! Truly a great burden that puts her entire character in context.
What… caused this comment?
It was the only thing I could think of that Gaia wouldn’t be good at! XD She doesn’t need to wear glasses, an admittedly reaching yet plausible shortcoming in a comic where 90% of the cast does.
I never thought I’d see the words “shortcoming” and “not wearing glasses” in the same sentence.
Such a shame I can’t listen to this song until my working day is over.
Singing girl with a guitar is more adorable than a bucket of kittens. It reminds me of Jodie Holmes from Beyond: Two souls and Max Caulfield from Life is strange. Max wasn’t singing though.
It really seems such a waste using green haired girls as fighters, when you can easily make them superstars.
Guitar girls are the best. <3
And I hope you like the song!
Her voice sounds surprisingly new to me) I realized I never actually listened French music.
French Canadian!
And there’s also the english version!
But can she play “The Ecstacy of Gold“
Of course.
I am afraid to ask if Gaia can play Dire Straits “Sultans of Swing” better than Mark Knopfler , cause, well, I trying to like Gaia and Saki equally as my favourites here….
Ah man, one of my favorite songs…
Well, can Gaia ?!?! Cause it really goes to show how much I rate logical analytical and deductive thinking to think that Saki’s just barely hanging by her fingernails with her shared top place with Gaia in my books… And that’s amusing that Saki can make a mean Teppenyaki dinner…
Not gonna lie, I squealed.
You fangirl.
Hmm, Laurence is still in the banner.
Yeah, the site was fucked up all morning and she couldn’t leave.
Well, she left now.
She can’t wear orange.
But she is, her headband is a very orange-red.
I’m not sure what contrast your screen is set to, but that is clearly red. Also, even if it wasn’t red, it’s also not orange. Orange may be a complimentary color to green, but I don’t think that Gaia could pull it off in the same way that Clem does.
Yup, there’s absolutely no orange in Gaia’s red. It’s actually a rather dull red all the way to the left of my color palette. ;)
Nah, it’s plain old red.
Anyone notice Saki has her sword back?
Oh, clever you!
Conroy had her sword, remember? He just gave it to her off panel after they hung out at the movies.
I remember, a bunch of terrorists entered the scene but they were destroyed by the shady operations duo. It was then that Saki got her sword back.
It all happened! It was super exciting! But it was off screen… ;-)
I heard that artist took some flak in Quebec for the English recordings. Did she do an album that was English only? Not sure how I feel about that.
I’m actually in your town right now, and it’s lovely as always. Hot, though. Feels like I brought some of the insufferable Ontario humidity and heat up with me and deposited it at your doorstep. Sorry about that.
People always take some flak here for singing in English. I took flak for having Frivolesque in English only for the longest time. Denis Villeneuve takes flak for doing movies in Hollywood now.
Quebec is super scared of English. Because it represents a loss of identity for us, I’d say.
As for Beatrice, her latest album is bilingual.
AND WHAT?
You’re in Quebec City and you didn’t give me a holler?
An we don’t need your humidity, we’ve got our hands full with ours. :)
I get the fear of English. I get it because I go to Quebec and the culture is distinct and unique and so very wonderful — still in line with much of English Canadian culture, but the language is so critical. So I get it. I really do. I also get the desire to reach a wider audience, though.
I am sure that Cœur de Pirate does the Nina’s “99 Luftballoons / 99 Red Balloons” trick whenever she can find English words that fit the structure of the song, Gekko, strictly for commercial reasons. Cause let us face it, – I can not remember a single French-only song that went mainstream here in English Canada since Mitsou’s “Bye Bye Mon Cowboy”, in what – 1988 ?!
Ah Mitsou. Such fond memories. (Actually, the memories were formed after the fact when I’d see her videos on Much More Music in the late 90’s during their ‘exploration into 80’s cultural oddities’ hours.)
Yeah, but French Canadian singers are usually quite happy with finding mainstream success in french speaking Quebec, you know? I don’t think they care about the English speaking market. We know you guys totally hate to listen to music that’s not in your own language. ;)
In fact, most of them aim to get big in France. It’s quite hard to get some airtime over there as well.
But wow. I never knew you guys knew about Mitsou.
It’s a shame that the language of a song seems to make so much of a difference to people. I’m quite happy to listen to nice songs I can’t understand a word of (or barely). Like J-pop.
I quite liked Alizee when she had those few rare French hits here. And I loved the few Spanish versions of Shakira’s songs I heard as well.
Maybe I should actively look for hits from around the world, instead of hoping to stumble across them.
Yeah, well remember the times, Dez, The Parachute Club was disappearing and neither Alannah Myles, Alanis Morissette nor Celine Dion were discovered yet and Shania Twain was still singing only Country. So it fell to Mitsou to save English Canada from a massive over-exposure to Candi & the Backbeat, but the damage was already done….
I have deep concerns with her guitar setup : the small E-string is not attached to the last tuning peg, so two strings have to share the same peg somewhere. And Gaia’s picking technique seems a bit… beginner-ish :P
What’s up with perfection nowadays?
TBH, I think she’s bluffing this one.
Are you sure that Gaia isn’t hiding an MP3 player running some guitar track under the cushion? -_^
Gambatte!
Why did it take me so long to see this post?
I guess I was deep into my vacation when you posted this.
Thanks Frank for reminding me how little I know about Guitar playing. ;)
You can tell she’s a guitar goddess because she’s getting good sound from an electric guitar that isn’t plugged to an amp.
Maybe it’s wireless?
