115 – Encounter
The further adventures of Marie-Neige, Chloe and Mimi. They make a cute trio.
Many people asked me if Mimi was Chloe’s daughter for some reason. I guess all my characters look similar. Although the fact they dress in similar fashions doesn’t help. Oh well.
So Flore is a librarian. I bet you were dying to know what her day job was. You can’t possibly afford such a nice place by just daydreaming all day.
Drawing libraries is super hard, even if it’s just that one section. T_T
As always, if you like Frivolesque, don’t forget to comment, follow me on Twitter or like the Facebook page!
Maybe Flore believes that Chloe also looks young for her age.
Your avatar compelled me to dig wikis about SWAT Kats, and gave me a good bout of nostalgia.
That is sometimes the reason I set up the link explaining what gravatar I’m using today for. ^_^
Never saw it myself, but the name alone earned it a spot in my “watch it eventually” list.
Probably. She isn’t good at guessing people’s ages, because she has no point of reference. Neither herself nor do her two parents look their age.
I have dealt with so many people who either looked older or younger then their actual ages for so long, I have trouble telling people’s ages.
Same…
Great. All I did was look at a comic with library stacks in it and now I’m literally salivating. I don’t have time to marathon novels and/or textbooks; I should be sleeping…
By which I mean to say that your effort in drawing the books was not in vain; it’s excellence on par with the hilarious/cute expressions.
And I’m literarily salivating for the same reason ;)
I’m not much of a book reader… They scare me.
Did you borrow something from the Addams’ library perhaps? :P
Did they give you paper cuts or something?
i wonder if a fight will break out between kampfers? that’d be cool.
I… don’t get it *blush*
A fight between fighters?
Kampher is an anime/manga in which the first big fight scene takes place when the two main characters meet up in a library. there, they run into, and then fight the third main character of the series. it was a reference i didn’t really expect anyone to get. i just have a need for some action of late, need to go watch something exciting and get it out of my system.

Thank you! I did hear about the manga and guessed you was talking about it but I didn’t read it nor know about the “library fight”, now it makes a lot of sense ;P
the manga is good, the anime is ok. but i think both end before the story is finished. maybe they continued the manga, i haven’t looked it up in a while.
I knew it was a reference to the anime, but I’ve never seen it. Is it good?
Kampfer is ok. it’s frivolous, campy, and one thing it really has going for it, is that portrays confident women in a good light. in fact it kinda pokes fun of the idea that the ideal woman is weak and vulnerable. it could have been great, but it’s only 14 episodes long, it ended early, and it doesn’t resolve the plot. so i can’t really recommend watching it unless you’re ok with just girls being funny and little cute, and then having a show leave you hanging….
now, a really good show that has similar features, is Birdy the Mighty. it has everything good about Kampfer, is in a SF setting, great character, story, and has a lot more action. it does almost everything right and is really unappreciated as an anime. i’m not really sure why. maybe it’s the bad title, maybe it hits to close to home when it comes to gender bending. idk.

the modern two seasons from the late 2000’s , are worth watching. the original OVA from the 80’s is worth watching too, though the modern one is better.
Birdy seems to have a lot in common with Gaia ;)
yes. and everyone knows it’d be cool to be all superhuman n’ stuff. either like Gaia or by genetic engineering and a cool bio-mech suit like Birdy.
Well, I planned to see some of “Birdy…” on a bit of spare time I was going to have but I stumbled with my “Girls und Panzer” directory and, of course, got caught instead :) So, maybe next week ;)
:D
The mouseover text made my day :)
The idea that M-N might very well be a pre-op M2F transsexual intrigues me.
It’s not gonna happen. :)
Drats, foiled again. ƪ(‾_‾)ʃ
Are you saying she is post-op? ;-p Just asking because I’m evil.
Nothing evil about it. She no, she’s all woman. :)
Lol. I’m sneaky like that.
There’s alt-text!?
Crap, I need a proper computer.
Oh, you really do :)
It say: “Is Marie-Neige the father?”
I looked Frivolesque on Chrome on my smartphone and ALT text doesn’t appear at all.
Awwww<3! Now I kind of want it to be real!
Chloe being Mimi’s mom? No way. I keep saying she’s too young, although I guess people do have kids sometimes in her age range… But they wouldn’t be 9 year olds, of course. Although you can be sure that if Chloe has kids someday, they’re have their Auntie Mimi for sure.
I thought Kris was referring to M-N being the father. :D
Those bookshelves took a lot of dedication!
Frivolesque overall takes a lot of dedication. T_T
I wonder where I find all the energy for it.
Well, gotta say, I’m pretty sure all of us here enjoy it big time… :)
Aw thank you… =D
As of this post, Frivolesque is #80th in rankings.
Woot. I’m staying afloat!
Now it’s #79th
Bummer, it dropped down(up?) to #93rd.
That’s good, we were 146 at 1st evening and 112 at yesterday evening.
Frivolesque is back in the top 100 now :)
Interesting. I wonder how old Flore thinks Cloe is? Most people’s first guess one would think would be kid sister. One can bet that that is probably the first question on Cloe’s mind. (with the next one being “Mimi looks like my kid?”)
Chloe is around 23 or 24, so there’s no way she could have a 9 year old kid… Flore is just weird like that. :)
And I think Chloe is a bit self conscious of her looks.
Well… 23-9=14. Not unheard of, but certainly squicky outside of medieval settings.
That or within a reality TV setting.
Ew.
Those are just squicky by default.
I guess that maybe Cloe would be questioning her fashion choice for that day.
Her fashion choice that day is quite close to her fasihon sense for every other day. :)
Chloe might need to update her wardrobe so she doesn’t get mistaken for someone old enough to have a 10yo kid.
A problem that’s easily solved with time travel.
Nothing to say other than Marie-Neige is happy so I’m happy. She’ll probably be in a good mood for a while :)
There. You’re happy. :)
Poor Chloé! This made me happy :D
Thank you Kim! :)
Nonsense Flore, Chole reproduces by budding.
I’d like to see that. :)
Budding is a form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division at one particular site. The new organism remains attached as it grows, separating from the parent organism only when it is mature, leaving behind scar tissue
I’m totally sure that I absolutely don’t :(
don’t wanna see it anymore lol
Still sounds fascinating to me.
I’ve heard of the term “a budding young woman”, but I don’t think this is what they meant.
you should draw your own comic, in book form, as a book on one of the shelves. like, in Flore cart. as if someone was reading it and now Flore is putting it back. one can dream right?
Ooh, neato. And it would have continuity ;)
see. it would be awesome!
But guys. The Frivolesque comic exists in the Laurence World, not in the proper Frivolesque universe. It would implode otherwise.
“The Frivolesque comic exists in the Laurence World, not in the proper Frivolesque universe”
Meh, those boundaries are already blurry ;)
“It would implode otherwise”
Cool! Go ahead :)
Also, you would be in good company :P
The people who shelve books are usually library technical assistants, typically college students hired part time to do that job. Although when the students aren’t available because of summer break or etc. and books are piling up in the back, librarians (and any other warm body) do sometimes get pressed into service shelving books. And librarians do shelf sweeps too (where mis-shelved books are removed from the shelves and carted to where they need to be), they usually don’t trust the students with that, given that the students may be the reason the books are mis-shelved. (It wasn’t me, I promise, all the books I shelved as a LTA made it to the right spot and I usually even tidied the surrounding books!). So maybe Flore is doing a shelf sweep…
I loved working in the library. I couldn’t see doing it as a profession though, since you need a MLA (Master’s in Library Arts) and the pay is so low. You really need a spouse with a high paying job to be a librarian today, sigh. Or maybe a sister and parents willing to subsidize you a bit so you can have your dream job.
Oooh boy. I knew someone would point mistakes.
Actually, Flore isn’t a proper librarian, but a lower library employee. Library Technician? I don’t know too much about the right terminology for it. (namely, because I guess it’s different in my native language) but I got the inspiration from a friend who does just that. :)
She’s no student, though, and she earns enough to afford a nice place. She doesn’t have a car or anything (her scooter is quite vintage and fully paid) and otherwisey lives a mostly frugal existence. (she doesn’t even own a cell phone)
Does Flore have a Master’s degree in Library Arts (MLA)? If so, she’s a librarian (albeit possibly a junior one, perhaps responsible for managing and keeping clean a particular collection or section of the library as well as general odd jobs). If not, she’s a library assistant or specialist. This seems rather arbitrary, but appears to be how the library profession defines who is a librarian or not, by whether they hold a MLA or not.
I went to a school that had 16,000 students in a town that had a total population of 80,000 so the college students were a big portion of the population and a logical choice for cheap workers for the local public library, but I suppose a large city where college students are a small part of the population may work differently. A large city might also pay better. I know how much our reference librarians were paid, and it was pitiful, barely enough to rent a 1 room apartment and feed self and cat at best. As a LTA I was of course paid even less.
Oh, I work for the public sector, I totally understand the difference a Master’s Degree can do. ;)
Meh. I don’t know. Part of me wants her to have the same job as my friend, but at the same time, having a character in Frivolesque having a college degree could be fun.
Is this a local, state or college/university library?
Local! Flore works at Gabrielle-Roy, Quebec City’s largest public library. It’s also conveniently located near pretty much every other real-life location seen in Frivolesque so far.
Except for the mall.
Well, Frivolesque made it through the whole month in the top 100.
Last month it was at place 231 while this month is ending in place 78, also 254 votes back then, against 804 now.
Although I decided to chill out with being vocal about TWC I still think it’s important and something positive to the comic to stay at high places, so….
Well done, keep voting and good luck!
Thank you so much, Fred!
But Flore is so short… Must be exhausting to work that way, when you need a ladder every now and then, just because you can’t reach that bloody shelf.
Somehow, it is also amusing to observe such person trying to reach high-up thing. So cute ^_^
Isn’t that why they have those rolling stepladder thingies.
Indeed. Even tall people like me use those rolling stepladder thingies to get a good look at the top shelves, even though technically I can reach them without it. My shorter LTA coworkers of course needed them just to reach the top shelves, but that’s why we had them.
Wait, they are not to sing on then? o_O
No that’s just an optional extra.
Flore is so cutely vertically challenged.
Happy birthday Clementine! :)
And a late one for you too Jonathan! :)
Did any of you have a party?
Whoa, you’re keeping track of those! =D
Wait, who’s Jonathan?
Hah! Not so much in fact :) I first noticed Liliane’s in May but a bit too late, then since Chloé was the next I had the intention to congratulate her fittingly as the first one :) but somehow it totally slipped out of my mind :( and I missed Conroy’s too until today when I remembered Clementine’s almost by chance.
Well, I really like her so not a bad character to start with anyway :)
So how old does that make Clem then?
The Frivolesque cast don’t age with our real world time. Really, not even a year has passed since the beginning of the comic. It might be July for us, but in Frivoworld, they’re reaching the end of September. Explaining why they suddenly all wear sweaters and jackets. :)
But Clementine is, I think, 21 or 22.
And like the Simpsons and Ash from Pokémon, they will remain the same age forever right?
From the southern hemisphere it seemed just logic :P
That means that we missed Saki’s birthday in comic. Pity, I would have loved to see Gaia surprising her with a homemade cake and Saki’s moved reaction ;)
Oh! Conroy, duh.
He was born on a 1st of July. He’s a True Patriot.
As you as well it seems :)
Luckily he appears to be having it better than Ron Kovic :P
Dude, I’m French Canadian. We are so, non patriotic and shit.
i’m happy “GATE: thus the JSDF fought there”‘s first episode just aired. i’m excited to see it and i hope it’s as good as the manga!
http://www.crunchyroll.com/gate
Mimi dresses like Chloe who dresses like 50% of the population around here. So not really a case of them being too identical.
Jeans, Glasses, T-Shirts and hoodies?
Heh. (oh, and where is “around here”?)
