214 – Trigger
When I said I’d make a bunch of glasses related jokes this chapter and asked for suggestions, this one thing is what every glasses wearer I know complained about.
Seems like EVERYONE loves to tell a glasses person how blind they have to be when they try on their specs. Poor Chloe.

Even if she doesn’t see well Chloe is still spec-tacular.

Cutest face.
The puns, they won’t stop!
Must … resist … urge to spew all the glasses puns accumulated in years of wearing them.
When they do this to me, I tell them in gory detail about the six eye operations I’ve had to get to the point of being able to see at all. I do it so they will NEVER consider saying to someone with glasses again! :-)
Dare I ask about this?
Not here. I don’t want to gross anyone here out. Some people get seriously freaked about it. One classmate actually fainted when I told how they injected the immobiliser.
Chloé should probably get checked. On that note, I should as well.
Yeah, looking from afar your mane makes it look like you’re wearing glasses, too.
Given the omnipresence of glasses here, I don’t think I ever even questioned that it might not be glasses until you motivated me to check closely just now.
I am glad to read that I wasn’t the only one who thought that at first.
Sigh, now I want to see both Juju’s and your avatar with actual glasses. ^_^ Or maybe a monocle.
I have a question about the french version:
In panel 4 Chloe says “parce quelqu’un”, but when I looked up what “from” is in french it said “par”. I only know “parce” as part of “parce que” (because). Is that Quebecian dialect?
I just checked it because I was curious how Chloe would swear in French. So, she didn’t say “shit”, but what does “crisse de TV” mean? Does it just mean it’s a screecing TV, because it’s so old, or is that a colloquial expression? Google told me it might mean “fucking TV”, but curiously that only happened when I translated it to German (i.e. “ficken TV”).
That was a bloody typo. It should have been “par”, of course. I fixed it now.
I actually dropped the “crisse” thing too. It was too much bad language for Chloe. It pretty much means “the fucking TV” in Quebec french, (crisse, familiar for “christ”, a really bad swear word in Quebec, just like every other religious-based swears we have)
I’m pretty sure Google translate would go into Quebec swears. French speakers from France don’t usually know about those, so I guess Google wouldn’t either.
I see, so she’s only allowed to swear in English then. :-)
Didn’t expect crisse to mean Christ. Poor old dude is considered a bad swear word. XD Just let her say “sacre bleu” instead. That sounds so adorable and I wouldn’t mind reading that in the English version as well. XD
No french speaking person who has been alive in the last three centuries has ever said “sacrebleu” I’m pretty sure. Unless they want to talk like a pirate or something. It always pisses me off when stereotypical french characters in English-language media go “sacrebleu hon hon hon” all the time since it’s got absolutely no basis in reality.
All the bad swear words in Quebec are are borrowed from the Catholic church, which was rather all-controlling here from the early history of New France until the late 60s. So using these words was the utmost rebellion against the church. They did lose their religious meaning with time (like I said, Christ mutated into “crisse”) but they’re still the worst swears you can utter here in Quebec. All the stuff English speakers use as swears, which are usually related to bodily functions, are quite benign here. ;)
That’s why my characters tend to swear more in English. I know it’s just as bad for English speaker ears, but it’s not to me, and it’s a bad habit.
So what is Chloe’s vision? 20/200?
I have no idea how foot/based visual acuity works, but I can tell Chloe has a -6 prescription in her glasses. XD
And yes, Saki is worse than that.
Not sure what a -6 means though.
It means bad
It’s not as bad as my mom’s. (I think that’s -8)
But from how Chloe has to strain her eyes to see the TV, I think her vision got worse.
If memory serves me right, -6 means you can focus up to 1/6th of a meter (about 6.5 inches for the metrically challenged). Beyond that things are out of focus.
From what I can find, it seems to be worse than 20/300 (that’s roughly -3.5), but there isn’t actually a 1-to-1 correspondence because they measure different things. (One is how well you see, the other is how much correction you need. But you might still not have 20/20 vision if you’re optimally corrected.)
Haha it’s not the first time I drew Chloe squinting to see distant things.
Her glasses are old!
My eyesight is not that poor, but I have different levels of myopia on left and right eye, so wearing my glasses makes people really uncomfortable.
I think every Frivo girl has the same myopia in both eyes because it’s easier to manage that way. ;)
I know what you mean. Between operations there was several months where I was very shortsighted in one eye and farsighted in in the other. People’s usual reaction to trying my weird looking glasses was an involuntary “Ack!” and quick removal.
(Also made me a little sick every time I took them off.)
It’s nice to see Chloe putting her foot down for a change.
It’s just nice to see her upset once in a while.
Almost makes you want to upset her more often…
j/k
I just love how you use that old Nobita face when she removed her glasses
That’s, like, my favorite Japanese stock expression, and one of the few I use in Frivo. XD
I’m still frequently baffled by some of the stock expressions in the anime & manga I’m currently viewing. But I’m even worse with real human expressions, so I guess that is to be expected.
I did know that Québécois French differed significantly from French French, for want of a better term. I speak North African French quite fluently (from working there) and Frenchmen recoil and/or stare at this accomplishment, the English having no great reputation as linguists.
AMEN!
Wait a second, Dez! I thought Chloe was the only one in your strip that drives a car ! If she is as “blind as a bat” as MM thinks she is, does this mean that the typical “Montreal Driver” jokes also apply to Quebec City ?!?!
I wear glasses myself. I just can’t see far distance. It’s bad when I choose not to wear glasses when I go out in public and have to squint to read a menu.
How about having them watch Gravity Falls.
Really glad we’re getting a whole slew of glasses jokes after all this time.
9 optometrists out of 10 recommend reading Frivolesque. The last one got fired because he didn’t.
heh!
I think you need a “notify me of replies” checkbox, because I totally forgot to check for responses on the sacrebleu thing. I’ve never heard a French person say that word either, I just love it because it sounds so cute. It surprised me to read that it’s apparently associated with pirate speech though. I thought of noblemen. I don’t really expect the girls to use it, except maybe as a joke.
And I was also surprised to read that Chloe’s english swearing is benign to your ears, because to me it’s the French version that sounds so adorable. French is such a beautiful language, you can’t swear properly in it. XD
I’ve seen other sites with one such checkbox, but I don’t know how to include one on Frivolesque. :(
And yes, it’s total pirate speak. Noblemen have been dead for more than 200 years now, so they’re not really part of french pop culture anymore. XD
And we can absolutely swear properly. It’s you guys who are adorable with your little body functions swears. :)
It’s interesting how every culture has their own favorite topics for swears and insults.
In the Netherlands we’re big on using diseases and genitals. But American influence has made it’s big two a favorite here as well.
