196 – Theories
Well, that escalated quickly.
You should never assume anything about people until you get to know them better.
Everyone seems to have a theory about what Laurence is. Do you?

I have and I already wrote it earlier, but anyway: the simplest explanation is that Laurence is Flore’s clone, created based on Liliane’s log of Flore’s crazy dreams. Thus I consider all previous outworld Laurence strips to be a fantasy, and Laurent being able to see little Laurence to be just him playing along.
This may not be perfect, but at least it doesn’t need any metaphysical mystic stuff to explain things – just good old sci-fi, and we already know for sure Frivolesque has some sci-fi.
Come to think of it, she might be a classic long-lost twin, separated from family when she was too young. This way Flore would have a basis for imaginary twin and Liliane wouldn’t know about her.
Well since you asked. The real mystery isn’t about Laurence but why Lilliane doesn’t acknowledge her existence or why the rest of the group does. Is it a shared hallucination?! Is Lilianne selectively blind or maybe doesn’t have the mental acuity to perceive Laurence? If Laurence exists which I’m inclined to say she does based on the perception of six people then what makes Lilianne different?…….Or it’s aliens!
Or it could turn out that like in the manga Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Laurence was dead all along but because she donated her organs and the other cast members have had some kind of organ operation, only they can see her.
I’m liking this, but how would Gaia need an operation with her regenerative powers? Unless it was something like a accident or something, heart too damaged to allow regen to kick in, shove a new 1 in, BOOM! Her body pulls itself together on the table, she wakes up despite sleepy-meds-guy trying to stop her, then just walks out looking for clothes that aren’t damaged…
Annoying.
:(
I think Laurence is a character in a fictional comic with an author who likes to toy with the readers. :P
You might be on to something.
This is the internet, we’re ALL fictional characters!
And we’re ALL toying with the readers! :-)
Marie, Laurence might be a futa that’s why she can go anywhere she likes. ;)
I must reiterate what Chloe said: “Why must you always fetishize everything?”
excluding glasses? :>
Eh, glasses are harmless to fetishize, since that doesn’t involve insulting a category of human beings. The term “futa” is steeped in transphobia and dehumanization of intersex people.
Why is Laurance smiling as if she knows perfectly well what the discussion was about? ¬_¬
She’s always smiling.
Except for that time Mr. Toad was about to do a dance thingy and stopped him dead in his tracks ^_^
Laurence is obviously an alien space parasite that cloned itself from Flore’s DNA on her teacup, Starman style, in strip #2. I think strips #100 & 162 confirm it.
(Actually I’m hoping Chloé’s right in panel 2, but I might be biased.)
Haha. Chloe’s “explanation” counters Marie’s crossdressing fantasies, but doesn’t explain anything about Laurence.
True. But I never let facts get in the way of hope.
Aw. :(
I’m going with “Laurence is alternate-universe good Flore”. (Marie-Neige was right the other week; they’ve been hanging out with the evil twin.)
>Laurence is a gender neutral name
MN pls
To the less-French ear, “Laurence” isn’t a gender-neutral name; it’s decidedly male.
The trans-something theory started sounding very plausible the moment we were told her name… except that most of the time such folks change their name to suit their new lifestyle.
Ah well… Quebec is Quebec; their own rules apply. :P
I have a theory about Laurence: I theorize what ever is up with her, we’re not going to find out for a really long time.
LOL yeah, probably :P
Maybe we will find out on page 200.
Daniel here. Already posted my theory, but I’ll throw it in the ring again. Why not, join the fun…
My theory is Laurence is the Flore of another dimension, another reality if you will, who seems to be able to cross dimensions somehow, most likely with ease considering how often she stops by. I’m guessing it’s an ability in he blood/genes/spirit/etc, as she seems to have crossed over slightly while still a child. Not fully tho, just enough for those sufficiently “in tune” with her to see, hear & interact with her (sorry Liliane, but you don’t fit that criteria, being basically the polar opposite of Flore).
By being the Flore of another Universe, and by having developed such a close friendship, it would be much easier to describe Laurence as Flore’s twin, as opposed to “the Flore from another Universe with identical DNA but different personality who’s capable of crossing into our dimension from time to time”. They’re VIRTUALLY twins, being the same person person just from 2 different dimensions, plus they’ve been friends for so long they know each other as well as they know themselves, so why not go with the twins cover story? They basically are already…
Don’t forget Laurence seemingly came out of the infinite mystery box back in #190. It’s probably a portal to another universe and she’s been trapped in there for so long Liliane probably forgot about her, or never been aware of her in the first place, until Flore got hold of both the box and its key again. Meanwhile, Flore used her as her imaginary friend to cope with the loss or even remained in contact with her between universes via telepathy.
Makes sense to me.
Additionally, Flore might even be able to temporarily travel to Laurence’s universe through her dreams and vice-versa, where they appear as some sort of ghost in each other’s universes. I don’t think we ever saw Laurence confirmed to be existing in the girls’ universe until now.
Well, she was in a video on Eleonore’s channel. For what it’s worth.
My theory is that Laurence is exactly what she seems to be: Flore’s imaginary friend manifested by the mystery box.
My own theory is that Laurence is a ghost in the typical western scene of the word, and that she died at a very young age. Thus Liliane denies her existence as she knows she is dead, and at first Flora is either shocked that others see Laurence or tells others to forget about (seeing and talking to) her.
While alive Laurence experimented in witchcraft and other black arts, to the point where she can communicate with animals and give bears the ability to play chess. and create potions or poisons, one of which Liliane manged to drink (Can’t tell by design or accident) which resulted in her colour-blindness, obtuseness, and whatever the heck is wrong with her eyes causing her to wear those shades all the time. (Even indoors). As a “Ghost Witch” Laurence has managed to make herself more “solid” than your typical translucent ghost and she still seems to be able to do whatever she did while alive.
This is my basic founding for my theory made back in comic 189, where I say that Laurence is just a Frivolesque version of the Quebec legend of Marie-Josphte (Le) Corriveau, who was believed to be a witch, believed to have poisoned anywhere from two to seven husbands and was believed to be a witch. Le Corriveau was alive in Quebec City in the 1700’s… so its “local” too!
It seems too that Flore does seem to have at least some witch like powers, the ability to play chess and communicate with bears but I grant you that this particular belief just allows me to use the tongue twisting sentence “Which witch is which?” in accurate context.
Marie-Neige a toujours raison même lorsqu’elle a tort. She is my Goddess :)
Flore has an imagination powerful enough to create entire worlds. We happen to be living in the one she is exploring now.
So she’s like Haruhi? Except perhaps, not unaware of it.
