Nadeshicon 2015 came and went, and I had one of the best weekends ever. A big thank you to all of those who were there and made my time there totally awesome.
And back to Monday. You were all curious to know what was in the box, right? Too bad Flore is such an unreliable point of view character.
This comic was actually penciled in early 2013 back when Frivolesque was just starting, but I kept pushing it further and further because I wanted to focus on other things first.
It easily turned out into one of the best looking strips I made so far! That creature is nasty. I never knew I could draw things like that. His name is Nergal. I don’t think it’ll ever happen again.
As always, if you like Frivolesque, don’t forget to comment or like the Facebook page!
Hmmm?
Flore.
Saki better not show up since tentacles and Japanese girls wearing school uniforms are a naughty combination.
But she has a sword. Usually, the schoolgirl with the sword wins.
Not always. Usually, but not always… O_O
Only if she’s a magical girl or a supreme martial artist, otherwise…
ε=ε=ε=ε=(っ*´□`)っ
She is quite the latter.
Is your Kirby face propelling itself with farts?
It does kinda look like that but it’s meant to be a run away emoji.
In my experience weaponry and skill fail vs tenecle monsters when you are wearing a shcool girl outfit its a Xntific fact
You know, I am reviewing my guesses about Flore’s wet dreams now :P
Of course… Wait, what?
Excellent work, the dark side of DEZ, Lovecraft would be pleased :)
It seems you’ve read a bit ;)
My dark side never fails to surprise people.
You’re a Sith? Are you the master or the apprentice?
Eh, the Rule of Two was a silly rule anyway.
Yeah. Especially since being a Sith master usually ends up with you being killed by your apprentice. I wouldn’t want to take one.
Well, they’re a useful tool to throw into situations the Master doesn’t want to risk being seen or killed in.
I’m the third party that nobody pays any attention to.
Like Darth JarJar?
Im gonna catch up its been a long time.
BTW: “Sourge of Cuth.”?
Fixed…
It is only today I realized where this was.
Apparently, hovertext is all the rage now.
The Warrior. The Pestilent. The bringer of light. Nergal has come. Son of Enlil and Ninlil. Scourge of Cuth. Devourer of souls, and giver of bliss.
…Funny as Hell when he gets drunk too. Becomes everyone’s ‘besty’, as he says… :P
He’s a party guy.
*Goes back a page & rereads posts. Chuckles*
I might not have been on target with the small minion thing, but it’s still “supernatural…” :P
Heh.
This box’s story is far from being over, in the grand scheme of things.
Plus Chuck with the dybbuk box and Plasma with The Key Master it seems that Frivolesque has some pretty clairvoyant commenters :)
People have more insight than you think. :)
Wait til you see the rest of this story.
*Grabs a big thing of popcorn & waits for the show…* :)
I guess monster is real because Philemon can see it. Or maybe Flore is just imagining that her cat sees it?)
Enjoyed the strip, something completely unexpected =)
Maybe Philemon and Flore have that special connection. :)
And thanks!
That is not at all what I expected!!
Me neither.
Flore is such an odd little duck. I guess her sister’s comments were on her dreams not an exaggeration (gee…ya think?) It’s the curse of certain creative types I guess.
(oh my….that’s a clunky first sentence. My bad.)
Liliane was on the mark, that’s for sure. She knows her sister well.
And so was Flore’s her character profile from two years ago. ;)
Well, that explains everything, I guess? That was quite unexpected, but quite cool, for some reason.
Merci! =D
Nurgle?

Nergal?
http://grimadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Nergal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nergal
Not sure which one I fear most.
Funny how I took the name of what is considered a sun god of the ancient world and drew it as a dark, twisted mass of writhing tentacles and claws.
Maybe it was Nurgle’s influence. Or Lovecraft’s.
I didn’t know about Nurgle, but surely fits. It looked to me as you took Luke, John, middle east religions, and Cthulhu Mythos, and put it all in a blender with marvelous results :)
Not many beings can pull off claw-nipples.
*shivers*
Thank goodness.
I definitely did not see that coming.
Lagren.. Hmm… He looks nasty indeed!!
Uh?
Seems friendly, an uncaring monster might’ve said something in its own incomprehensible language, but this one was nice enough to learn the language of the hosts (well, sort of considering they are in Quebec, so maybe not *that* nice)
Maybe he speaks his unholy language but Flore just understand it because of some psychic connection.
Or maybe I was just nice enough to have his speech “translated” to english for the readership. You know. Just like I do with the girls who, like you just said, live in Quebec and are probably speaking french and all. ;)
The only way to know is if there are puns or other plays on words that are language specific
You have no idea how this makes Frivolesque hard to write. (since I write every strip with a french and english version in mind… and somethings things work wonderfully in one language but don’t in the other…)
That does sound hard, I sympathize. I don’t think I could write something in two languages (I mean I could physically, I just don’t think I’d be willing) there are just so many satisfying expressions that can not be adequately translated…
Do you even speak two languages? :)
Yes
Whoa, I never knew that! Elaborate! :)
There is no reply option on that last comment so I’ll reply to this one instead: But I speak English and Russian. I came to Canada when I was teenager, so yeah… But they’re quite different grammar-wise so things that sound snappy in one are often cumbersome and awkward in the other, so I certainly wouldn’t want to write parallel dialogues.
Oh, wow, cool, I never knew that!
Although now that I think about it, your last name does sound kinda Russian/East European!
Dude, I’ve known you for about 10 years now, but I sure wish I could know you better. :)
Ha, I picture them speaking French every time, apart from tha place they look french to me somehow :)
Philémon’s dialogue: Well, that’s Tuesday ruined. AGAIN.
To me was: “Is that seafood I smell?” :P
Called it…kinda? Except that this is an Eldritch abomination rather than Divine vengeance.
Patience, young padawan.
Can’t it be both?
Err, DEZ, I’m sorry cause I’m going to be impolite here but I could use some enlightenment about this. The thing is that there is a strip on Questionable Content doing jokes about Canada and I really want to know if they are offensive or what from your point of view.
The strip is this one (yesterday): http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2942
I really apologize for bring this up but I feel it’s kinda important.
Man, that content sure is rather questionable… For instance, there are places with worse cell phone contracts, like the US for example. The rest seems legit
It’s Yelling Bird. Taking it even remotely seriously is about as silly as putting chocolate syrup on a hot dog.
If it makes you feel any better, the bird deprecates Jeph (the artist) far worse.
IMO all that makes no difference, but I don’t think Frivolesque is that kind of forum so I will not go any further.
Canada is a funny place, actually. Without turning this into a political rant, I’ll just say that Quebeckers rarely ever feel concerned by jokes aimed at Canada since they rarely ever include us. Unless the jab is specifically directed at french Canadians. Like Conan’s Triumph the Insult Dog trip to Québec City from a few years ago that offended EVERYONE here and I was like… chill out. It’s just a rubber dog, and any publicity is good publicity. ;)
Long story short. Quebec people aren’t offended at jokes aimed at our english speaking compatriots. We usually laugh at them too. ;) Since everything is about language here, I’m more offended at the fact Jeph Jacques is called Jacques, but pronounces it “Jack” and probably doesn’t speak a word of french.
;)
Thank you :) Culture and idiosyncrasy are so different from place to place that sometimes is hard to tell good from bad from outside. Also even if someone don’t want to be offensive they might be not successful. So I thought an actual canadian were the better to ask ;)
I was not aware that the distinction were so marked, you make it sound like two different countries. I think I wouldn’t be able to tell things apart around that, I guess I will need to read more :)
You better don’t ever know how lot of people here in south america pronounce, let alone write, French names and words. You may kill yourself :P
Thank you again.
Don’t worry, I don’t mind it when people can’t pronounce or write my language obviously. I was just making fun at the fact Jeph’s last name is very french and we were talking about his comic and all.
And yeah. French and English Canadians are really two different cultures in many ways even though it seems to piss some people off when this is brought to the table.

An American friend of mine once got susprised because I didn’t really get the “aboot” and “eh” jokes even though I was Canadian. I told him I never said “eh” or “aboot” because, you know… I spoke french.
I very rarely heard anyone say eh? seriously, usually they are being ironical or playing a Canadian during “Heads Up”. And, of course, no one on the Pacific coast says “aboot” it’s supposed to be a Maritimes ‘ thing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t quite say it like that either.
Aboot is Maritimes?
I thought the only part of Canada Americans knew about (and thus, made fun of) was Ontario!
i love it very much, this page has the keywords i love the most :D
“glasses” tentacle” “cute girl” and err… “kitty” :)
…”tentacles”, really?
hahah yes, because i love seafood ;)
hate to ask a dumb question but, i still don’t get it? when Flore says “remember me when you come into your kingdom” is she telling tentacles here that after Nergal conquers earth, he should spare Flore because she opened the doorway for him to enter our dimension? or is she warning him to behave as she is somehow a guardian of Earth?
It’s the former.
She’s unleashed the beast, so she’s telling him to remember her when he rules the multiverse.
I really just wanted to throw a random bible quote in there. I couldn’t help myself.
ah! a bible quote. no wonder i didn’t get it. i haven’t been to church in forever. mom made me wear vests that were to itchy. also, when i was six i asked my mom if Santa clause was real. she admitted he was not, and i instantly asked… ” if Santa isn’t real, how do i know God is real?” she was surprised and told me to go pray and i’d find my answer. so i did. i kneel’d by my bed and prayed while looking out the window. and i thought of how big the world was and asked, “if i wish for something, how can God hear me through the glass? how can he hear everyone at once? how could he be everywhere at once? if two people wish for things and God can’t make them both happy, how does he choose? and that’s when i realized God was also impossible. Like Santa Clause, it’s impossible to hear everyone, to visit everyone, to give everyone what they want. all at once. so yeah, itchy vests and never believing in God made me not go to church. this isn’t really relevant to the comic. i just felt like telling that story where almost no one would ever bother to read it.
Heh. That was a fun realization. I’ve never went to church either, I come from a deeply atheistic family. (or agnostic, in the case of my mother, I guess… she still believes in some sort of higher power, but she rejects religions)
Quebec is a pretty secular society now, but there are still some hints of Catholicism here and there.
But I did read the bible anyway, out of curiosity. There’s some cool stuff in there. :)
i’m surprised you read it lol. i assumed everyone would have moved on to the next comic. i come from a very religious family. my parents did believe in letting me learn on my own though. they still don’t except i’m an atheist. they think that as i get closer to old age, i’ll “re-discover God” i usually claim being able to read and libraries made me the scientific think i am. i distinctly remember banging pans together around 4 and thinking about the ringing sound. like they must be like waves on water in a bathtub because of how they faded in and out and seemed to bounce of walls. and that air must be a thing even though i couldn’t see it, because what was filling me when i breathed in deep? and that my throat must have something in it that used air to make sound too. anyway, most other people just don’t seem to be as curious as i am. so, as i’ve gotten older and met more people, i’ve accepted that curiosity is a powerful instinct in some and not so much in others. so maybe it wasn’t libraries. maybe it was instinct that drew me too them.
Dude, I get notices for every comment, and I like to reply to all of them while I still can. ^^
Coming from a secular society, it’s always strange to me to realize how religion still plays a big part in US culture. Especially since the USA is supposed to be the most advanced and influential country out there.
Baffles the mind, really.
You seem like a really cool person, at any rate. Being curious and constantly questioning yourself about the world you live in is a good thing. :)
I was the same.
based on your comic. i’ve assumed you were a curious sort the whole time i’ve read it. we should be internet acquaintances and party in cyberspace. also, i clicked back to the first couple of strips. Flore lists “great ancient beings of pure terror that feed on hope” among her dislikes. guess you really have been planning this comic for a looong time.
Haha. I have. That Nergal strip is the 4th strip I ever wrote. (meaning Flore’s “profile” page was written after that)
I just decided to postpone it for later.
And it just kept getting postponed. I wanted to establish the core cast first. And then realized I’d need someone to give Flore this box…
Laser-microphone
Or maybe he covered the world with smartdust (tiny sensors)
But of course that’s assuming he wants to listen. If God granted everyone’s wishes, the world would be either a much better place, or everyone would be dead. Possibly both.
She’s no Hellboy, but got a Box Full of Evil of her own… :P
Haha!
I love Hellboy. ^^
